Liberty emerges as a continuation of Freedom —a work created three years earlier, whose original and unique canvas is now held in a private collection— expanding its conceptual framework into a broader reflection on migration, identity and the unresolved meaning of freedom in the contemporary world. While it does not formally belong to the series Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past, it is deeply rooted in its conceptual foundation, extending the artist’s investigation into portraiture beyond the documentary into a more symbolic and universal language.
The figure portrayed is inspired by Maryury, a migrant woman who fled instability in Venezuela and later faced gender-based violence in Spain. Rather than presenting a literal narrative, Camazano constructs a symbolic presence—an embodiment of displacement, resilience and the complex condition of belonging that defines contemporary migration.
Created in the context of Camazano’s presentation at ArtExpo New York, Liberty establishes a deliberate dialogue with the iconography of the Statue of Liberty—historically perceived as a beacon of hope and arrival for millions of migrants. In this work, however, that promise is critically re-examined: the torch becomes ambiguous, the gesture uncertain, and freedom itself shifts from a declared ideal to a fragile and contested condition.
Rather than affirming a universal truth, Liberty poses an open question: is freedom a right, a negotiation, or an endless state of tension? The work situates itself precisely within that unresolved space.
From a production standpoint, the piece reflects Camazano’s distinctive methodology: a fusion of photography, digital painting and hand-finished intervention, resulting in works of strong material presence and conceptual depth. Each edition is produced to museum standards using Giclée printing on archival Fine Art paper or canvas, and is signed and numbered by the artist.
The original work—unique and non-reproducible—is available upon request.
To acquire Liberty is to engage with a work that transcends its image: a statement on migration, on the fragility of rights, and on the enduring complexity of what it means to be free.
