Diaspora

Diaspora (2024) belongs to Séfora Camazano’s series Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past, in which the artist reconsiders the visual language of Joaquín Sorolla through the lives of contemporary women.

The work takes as its point of departure the testimony of Dafna, an Israeli woman whose experience following the attacks of October 7, 2023, brought questions of displacement, identity and belonging into direct relation with the idea of home.

Rather than representing violence itself, Camazano constructs an image of apparent stillness. The white parasol, the seated figure and the luminosity of the Mediterranean shore create a space suspended between refuge and exposure.

The composition enters into dialogue with Joaquín Sorolla’s Clotilde on the Beach (1904). Sorolla’s luminous Mediterranean setting provides the compositional memory of the work, but its meaning is transformed: the beach becomes an ambiguous territory in which beauty, vulnerability and displacement coexist.

Here, diaspora is understood not simply as geographical separation, but as the experience of carrying identity, memory and belonging across borders.

The Limited Edition

This collector’s edition of Diaspora is limited to 15 individually numbered impressions.

Each work is produced as a Giclée Fine Art print on archival-quality paper, individually numbered and hand-signed by Séfora Camazano. Each impression is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity identifying the work, edition and individual number.

The edition derives from the unique original Diaspora (2024), a mixed-media work measuring 125 × 150 cm.

Context and Interpretation

Dafna’s experience following October 7 became the starting point for a broader reflection on what it means to leave a place without entirely leaving behind the questions attached to it.

After leaving Israel for Spain, displacement acquired another dimension. The question was no longer simply where home was, but how identity could be carried into a different country and when it felt possible to speak openly about where one came from.

Camazano transforms this individual testimony into a wider meditation on migration and belonging. Diaspora addresses the tension between leaving and belonging, between physical safety and cultural identity, and between the freedom to move and the freedom to declare where one comes from.

Dafna expressed that tension in a single sentence:

“I hope the day will come when I don’t have to think twice before answering where I’m from.”

From the Original Work to the Edition

The original Diaspora is a unique 125 × 150 cm work created through photography, digital painting, Giclée printing, acrylic and manual intervention on 100% cotton canvas, finished with UV varnish.

The limited edition translates the image into a smaller, collectible format while remaining strictly restricted to 15 impressions worldwide.

Each numbered impression forms part of the documented edition of the work and is signed by the artist and accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity.
