Retrats Femenins: Migrants

Biblioteca de la Dona · Valencia · Spain 30 April 2026 – 15 May 2026 Solo exhibition
Curatorial Text

“Retrats Femenins: Migrants” is an artistic and documentary project born from an investigation into female migration in Spain and the circumstances that force many women to leave their countries of origin. The exhibition brings together a selection of large-format photographic portraits of migrant women living in the Valencian Community, coming from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds. Despite their differences, they all share a common experience: having endured situations of violence, conflict, or vulnerability that marked the beginning of their displacement.

The protagonists, representing 15 nationalities, construct through a carefully curated selection of personal images an intimate narrative that transcends documentary representation. Far removed from the stereotypes often associated with migrant women, these works seek to restore their identity, dignity, and complexity, creating a new way of seeing and understanding their life trajectories. Each portrait thus becomes a space of visibility and recognition.

The project proposes a direct dialogue between the image and the viewer. The gazes of these women confront, invite empathy, and open a space for reflection on realities that are often rendered invisible. Through her artistic practice, Séfora Camazano approaches portraiture as an act of collective memory and as a tool for social awareness, where each story finds a place from which it can be heard, understood, and remembered.
