From the series Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past
Audacity forms part of Séfora Camazano’s ongoing series Female Portraits: Looking Back to the Past, in which portraiture becomes a space for memory, dignity, and critical reflection. Through women whose lives have been shaped by displacement, survival, and the pursuit of freedom, the series questions how social and cultural structures continue to define the contemporary female experience.
The work portrays Rquia, born in Morocco, who fled violence and persecution while six months pregnant. She risked her life on a perilous sea crossing to Spain, driven by a single purpose: to offer her daughter a different future. Her story — marked by fear, exile, and personal reconstruction — becomes here a universal symbol of courage and transformation.
Rather than approaching portraiture as documentation alone, Camazano constructs an image of strong symbolic presence, where presence itself becomes declaration. Rquia’s figure embodies a silent yet unbreakable resistance — a tension between vulnerability and inner strength that transforms the portrait into a reflection on freedom, identity, and survival.
The series is distinguished by its fusion of photography, digital painting, and manual intervention, resulting in works of powerful material presence and conceptual depth. Each edition is produced to museum standards as a Fine Art Giclée print on archival-quality paper, and is individually signed and numbered by the artist.
The original artwork — unique and irreproducible — remains available for private acquisition upon request. Limited edition Fine Art prints are also available exclusively through Galerie Portraits.
To acquire Audacity is to enter into dialogue with a work that transcends representation: a reflection on courage, freedom, and the human capacity to rebuild in the face of adversity.
Séfora Camazano works at the intersection of photography, oil painting and gold leaf — a practice exhibited across eighteen cities on four continents, including New York, Basel, Paris, Dubai and Venice.
